Halloween In Paris: 7 Spooky Things To Do

As I stated above, France generally isn’t big on Halloween as it is more seen as a commercial holiday here.

You’ll even find some cities that are already planning Christmas by putting up Christmas lights as early as late October, feeling like they are ready to skip Halloween entirely.

If you’re hoping to find the same Halloween spirit as you can find in the U.S., you’ll be disappointed; it’s best to manage you’re expectations!

However, that doesn’t mean you cannot have fun in Paris for Halloween. There are still plenty of fun, spooky activities for those who want to celebrate the holiday!

Fun Fact: How did Halloween get to France?

The roots of Halloween can be traced back to Celtic and Christian traditions, particularly the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holiday of All Saints’ Day.

Halloween only became popular in France during the late 90’s, so you can say that Halloween is a really recent thing for France. And it only arrives as commercial oriented day.

It really became popular because of two brands, “France Télécom” and “Coca Cola”.
France Télécom launched an offer called Ollaween for their orange-coloured mobile phone and handed out 8000 pumpkins on the Trocadéro esplanade.

Coca-Cola threw a huge “Halloween Party” in 1999, which inspired many other brands to follow in their footsteps, sensing a good opportunity to make money by making their own Halloween ads and products.

So, don’t expect the Eiffel Tower or any popular landmarks to dress up for Halloween or to go trick or threat in Halloween costumes! 🎃

Now that you have a little background on Halloween in France, let’s jump into the best things to do in the capital to celebrate Halloween in Paris!

Visit The Catacombs of Paris

Visiting the Catacombs is the perfect Halloween in Paris activity due to its eerie atmosphere, historical intrigue, and unique scares.

Going down into the depths of this underground ossuary, surrounded by millions of human bones, creates a haunting ambience ideal for the spooky season.

The catacombs’ rich history, associated with secret societies and ghostly tales, adds to the Halloween mystique, offering a distinct and memorable way to celebrate the holiday.

While the beautiful Cathedral won’t reopen its door to the public until 2024, you can find the perfect Halloween activity, delve down the depths of Notre Dame, explore its archaeological crypt and plunge into the past!

The Notre Dame de Paris crypt is a subterranean chamber beneath the famous cathedral, housing archaeological remnants, religious artefacts, and the tombs of bishops.

Visiting on Halloween adds an intriguing layer of mystery!

Descending beneath this Gothic masterpiece, you’ll delve into the lesser-known, dimly lit crypt, where centuries of history and secrets are interred.

The ambience creates a unique Halloween experience that invites contemplation of the passage of time, mortality, and the stories of those who rest below, making it a hauntingly fitting activity for the season and a great opportunity to learn more about the iconic cathedral!

Take a Tour Of Père Lachaise Cemetery

What is more spooky than a cemetery for Halloween? Paris has one of the most famous cemeteries in the world; Père Lachaise is the perfect place to visit around the Halloween holiday if you want to spook yourself a little while enjoying one of the most beautiful cemeteries the city offers.

It offers a unique and eerie experience as you wander through the ancient gravestones (some belonging to famous such as Edith Piaf and more) and mausoleums, surrounded by the fading autumn foliage. The atmosphere is imbued with history and a touch of mystery, making it an evocative and contemplative way to embrace the season’s spirit.

A specific haunted tour also occurs in Pere Lachaise Cemetery for Halloween (available on GetYourGuide).
Unfortunately, the tour is only in French, so I don’t recommend it unless you have a good level of French or want some practice!

Also, it’s free, so it’s perfect if you’re visiting Paris on a budget!

Take a tour of Paris’ Obscur History.

What is more spooky than uncovering all of Paris’s dark secrets, myths and obscure history by night?

This walking tour is the perfect activity for Halloween in Paris for those who want to check out different places in Paris, all while learning about amazing legends and facts about what shaped the city over the years.

The tour lasts 2 hours and takes place around Ile de la cité (including Notre Dame, Pont Neuf and Conciergerie)and is available in English only.
