How To Take The Train From Paris

Rail tracks at Gare Montparnasse in Paris. Best day trips from Paris by train

Taking the train in Paris is pretty straightforward; here is a list of all the main train stations in Paris where you will be taking the train for those various day trips you are about to go on!

You’ll find unusual day trips from Paris and some of the cheapest day trips from Paris that you can do simply by riding the RER train!

Gare Montparnasse

Gare Montparnasse, one of Paris’s major train stations, is the gateway to many fantastic day trips that delight any traveller.
It is one of Paris’s six major train stations, a bustling transportation hub connecting the city to various destinations. From Gare Montparnasse, travellers can embark on scenic train journeys, whisking them away to enchanting towns, vibrant cities, and picturesque landscapes. This makes it a convenient starting point for exploring the diverse regions of France.

If you’re taking an OUIGO, follow the arrows, as the boarding place differs from the main TGV, and you have to walk further down the station.

Gare de Lyon

Gare de Lyon, located in the heart of Paris, is a prominent train station offering excellent connections to domestic and international destinations.

With its stunning architecture and bustling atmosphere, Gare de Lyon serves as a gateway to various regions. It allows travellers to embark on exciting train adventures, whether they’re exploring the charming vineyards of Burgundy, venturing to the sun-soaked French Riviera, or venturing further to other European capitals like Geneva or Milan.

Gare d’Austerlitz

Gare d’Austerlitz, nestled on the left bank of the Seine River, is a historic train station in Paris that offers excellent connections to various regions of France.

From Gare d’Austerlitz, travellers can embark on scenic train journeys to destinations such as the Loire Valley, Bordeaux, and Toulouse, immersing themselves in the stunning landscapes, historical sites, and regional cuisine that make each destination unique.

Gare du Nord

Gare du Nord, one of the busiest train stations in the world, is a crucial transportation hub for domestic and international travel from Paris. With its central location and extensive train connections, Gare du Nord provides convenient access to iconic destinations like Brussels, London, and Amsterdam, making it a gateway to explore diverse European cities and indulge in rich cultural experiences.

Unfortunately, while Gare du Nord is one of the main hubs for train travel and allows you to take incredible day trips from Paris and explore amazing destinations, I don’t like the station; the architecture is beautiful, but the environment around the station is..gross and feels unsafe at night.

Gare de L’Est

Gare de l’Est, situated in the vibrant 10th arrondissement of Paris, is a central train station connecting the city to destinations in Eastern France and beyond.

With its striking façade and bustling atmosphere, Gare de l’Est offers travellers seamless access to enchanting regions such as Alsace (Colmar), Champagne, and even international destinations like Germany and Switzerland(you can reach Zurich by direct train), making it an ideal starting point for unforgettable train journeys filled with cultural experiences and scenic landscapes.

Gare Saint Lazare

Gare Saint-Lazare, located in the heart of Paris, is a bustling train station that serves as a gateway to destinations in Normandy and Western France.

From Gare Saint-Lazare, travellers can embark on picturesque train journeys to visit charming towns like Honfleur and Deauville, explore historic sites like the D-Day Landing beaches, or indulge in the culinary delights of the Normandy region, creating unforgettable experiences beyond the city limits of Paris.

It is a massive station, and it’s easy to get lost, as there are so many things going on with all the various trains, metro stations, and shops, so make sure to arrive early if you take the train from there.
