Is Troyes Worth Visiting?
For the short answer, yes, Troyes is worth visiting!
Its captivating history, culture, and charm blend makes Troyes a worthy destination in France.
This medieval gem in the Champagne region of France boasts picturesque half-timbered houses lining cobblestone streets, transporting visitors to another era. Its rich history is fully displayed in its well-preserved architecture, including the stunning Troyes Cathedral.

Troyes is famous for its remarkably preserved medieval architecture, characterized by charming half-timbered houses and winding cobblestone streets.
Additionally, it’s renowned for its historical significance, serving as a prominent trading hub during the Middle Ages. Troyes is also celebrated for its role in producing the world-famous Champagne!
How Many Days Do You Need To Spend In Troyes?
One day is enough to see all the main attractions in Troyes. Troyes is a great day trip from Paris.
I stayed 3 days and 2 nights in Troyes. However, I feel like a day trip to Troyes is enough to visit all the city’s points of interest and see most of it. Of course, staying more than one day allows you to slow-travel, check again places and soak in every moment, but one day is enough.
Where To Stay In Troyes?
During my visit to Troyes, I stayed at the Brit Hotel Privilère le Royal, a charming hotel close to the train station and the city centre. The room was spacious and clean, and the bathroom was beautiful; the hotel has a charming old vibe but is very clean and well-maintained.
The staff is also very friendly, and you can find a restaurant on the premises; I didn’t try it.

How To Get to Troyes?
It is very easy to get to Troyes.
Of course, you can drive to get there, but there are other options to get to Troyes.
The best option to reach Troyes is to book a train ticket; the tickets are cheap, and the train station is close to the city centre.
Another cheap option to consider is to travel to Troyes by bus. We travelled by bus to Troyes as the TER tickets were more expensive, 35€, while the bus ticket was 8€. And we took the train on the way back for 11€. I would rather have used the train both ways, but it was more interesting to take the bus!

Explore the Old Town
Troyes’ Old Town is a picturesque and historic city centre district. It is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval architecture, which transports visitors back to the Middle Ages.
Troyes’ old town is composed of what most European Old Towns are famous for old cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, historic sites and, of course, quaint and amazing to explore. Yet it never gets tiring to explore them.
The main square in the Old Town is the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville. It’s a bustling hub surrounded by charming buildings and cafes. The City Hall (Hôtel de Ville) is an impressive Renaissance-style building with a clock tower.
You can also find various boutiques, making it the perfect place for shopping; from clothes to antiques, you will find what you are looking for!
Within the Old Town, you’ll discover several historic sites, including the Troyes Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul), a magnificent Gothic masterpiece with beautiful stained glass windows and intricate sculptures.
Other notable sites include the Saint-Urbain Basilica and the Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte, a former hospital-turned-museum.
While these are located in the city’s old town, I will be writing about each of them specifically as these are things to do in Troyes on their own and deserve a place in this post!
Troyes Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul)
The Troyes Cathedral is celebrated for its stunning Gothic architecture, which dates back to the 13th century. Its construction began in the 12th century and underwent significant expansions and renovations over the centuries, resulting in its current form.
One of the most remarkable features of the Troyes Cathedral is its collection of stained glass windows. These windows are renowned for their exquisite beauty and historical importance. They depict biblical stories and scenes from the lives of saints in the vibrant, colourful glass.
The cathedral has witnessed numerous historical events and has been the site of royal coronations and other important ceremonies.
As I mentioned, the cathedral is in the city’s heart, making it a prominent landmark in the old town. It is often a focal point for tourists exploring Troyes.
Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte
As mentioned above, Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte is one of the landmarks of Troyes that you can visit in the Old Town.
Originally founded as a charitable hospital in the 12th century, it now stands as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the evolution of healthcare and medicine through the ages. The entrance, with its golden decorations, makes it feel like a very opulent place.
You can admire its stunning Renaissance façade before you get in. The ornate interiors and remarkable apothecary exhibit transport you back and through the ages of medicine, revealing the innovations that have defined this institution.
Ruelle des Chats
Discover the “Alley of Cats,” a charming laneway adorned with cat sculptures, each with its unique story. These sculptures are created by local artists and are placed throughout the alley, adding to its playful and creative atmosphere.
While I don’t think this alley can be considered a hidden gem due to its popularity, Ruelle des Chats feels somewhat hidden, making it feel like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by visitors exploring the city.
Of course, the alley has its own legends and stories, some of which involve the mysterious appearances of new cat sculptures. These legends add to the enchantment and intrigue surrounding the Ruelle des Chats. It’s a quirky must-see when you’re visiting Troyes.
There are many restaurants on this street, and you can find one called “Le Chat Noir” (Black Cat), which seems to be the most famous on the street. It doesn’t cater to one type of cuisine and offers.
The alley is conveniently located near the city’s historic centre, so you can easily incorporate a visit to Ruelle des Chats into your exploration of Troyes’ old town, with its half-timbered houses, museums, and other attractions.
Le Coeur de Troyes
“Le Cœur de Troyes” is a captivating art installation crafted by the talented artist Didier Marcel; this intricate sculpture, resembling a giant heart of intertwined branches, represents the city’s deep connection to nature and its artistic soul.
Located at the Place de la Libération, it is a striking symbol of Troyes’ commitment to blending urban life with natural beauty. The sculpture’s dynamic design and the way it plays with light and shadow make it a popular attraction, especially during sunset when it comes alive with a warm, glowing aura, symbolizing the city’s beating heart.
You can also find couples taking photos and families and kids enjoying the water fountains on a hot summer night there.
Ideally, while it is also nice during the day, I’d recommend you to see it at night if possible as I find it way more charming.

St Madeleine Church – Eglise de la Madeleine

Basilique Saint-Urbain de Troyes is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that graces the city’s skyline.
Built in the 13th century, this basilica is dedicated to Saint Urban, the patron saint of vineyards and winemakers. Its soaring spires and intricate stone carvings are awe-inspiring, while the interior boasts a tranquil atmosphere that invites contemplation.
The basilica is a testament to religious devotion and the architectural genius of the era. While admiring this beautiful building, you can find a few restaurants with terraces nearby to enjoy drinks or a meal.
Fun fact: The basilica was planned to be part of a much larger cathedral complex that would have been one of the largest in Europe, rivalling even Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
However, the grand plans were never fully realised due to various historical and financial constraints.
Le Marché des Halles
Marché des Halles de Troyes is a bustling indoor market that encapsulates the vibrant culinary scene of Troyes. With its origins dating back to the 16th century, it has been a hub of gastronomic delight for centuries.
There, you’ll find an array of fresh, locally sourced produce, from artisanal cheeses and meats to colourful fruits and vegetables. The market is a sensory delight, where the aroma of freshly baked bread mingles with the chatter of vendors and customers.
It’s a place to shop for gourmet treasures and a cultural experience that immerses you in the heart of Troyes’ culinary traditions. Even if you don’t buy anything it is. a nice place to stroll and enjoy the odours!
Stroll along Canal de la Haute-Seine
Take a leisurely walk or bike ride along the scenic canal, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city.
This picturesque waterway that meanders through the heart of Troyes, France. Constructed in the 19th century, this tranquil canal played a pivotal role in the city’s economic development, facilitating the transportation of goods and raw materials.
Today, it offers a serene backdrop for leisurely walks, providing a peaceful respite from the city’s urban hustle and bustle. Lined with charming bridges, leafy trees, and the occasional passing boat, it’s the perfect place to enjoy coolness on a hot summer day.

You can find these two main art pieces while strolling the Canal de la Haute Seine in Troyes.

The Outlet Troyes Glenn MacArthur is a shopper’s paradise.
With a vast selection of designer brands and high-quality fashion at discounted prices, it’s a haven for fashion enthusiasts seeking great deals. The outlet offers a wide range of clothing, accessories, and footwear, making it the ideal place for a shopping spree.
It’s the perfect place to enjoy some retail therapy. My boyfriend found a nice wallet there on our last full day in Troyes, and we enjoyed some delicious drinks/milkshakes from the Lindt restaurant afterwards!
