Kagoshima One Day Itinerary, Japan

I am currently on a one-year working holiday visiting Japan to visit all 47 prefectures, and my last trip took me on a 25-day trip around Kyushu, exploring the southern part of Japan.

Is Kagoshima Worth Visting?

Yes! Kagoshima is worth visiting even if you only have a day trip to Kagoshima City! You can still see the city’s prominent landmarks and get a good feel for it.

However, if you can, I’d recommend spending at least two or three days exploring the city at a more leisurely pace. I spent three days in Kagoshima Prefecture and two mainly exploring the city; it was a nice pace and an excellent way to enjoy it truly.

Tips To Visit Kagoshima City In One Day

Before we start to dive into details about the itinerary for the day, here are a few tips to know about when you visit Kagoshima:

  • You cannot use the IC card in the tram; only the RAPICA card, a specific card for the Kagoshima Tram, can be used. However, if you’re only there for one day, there’s no point in buying it.
  • You must buy a “Kagoshima City Tram / Bus / City View Bus 1-Day Pass” for 600 yen. This pass allows you to ride the tram and buses unlimitedly (city and view buses) for the day.
You also get a discount when buying tickets for attractions (e.g., the park). Upon arrival at the station, you can buy a physical ticket or download the app to have the digital version.

  • If you plan to take the ferry to Sakurajima, consider the “CUTE one-day pass” instead, which costs 1200 yen. You can learn more about the CUTE one-day pass here. Like the other pass, it offers a discount for tourist attractions.
  • If you’re travelling around Kyushu, you should consider buying the JR Kyushu to save money on the train and the regional pass for the area; there are different options and durations; you can check all the details of JR Kyushu Rail Pass here.

Kagoshima One-Day Itinerary Overview:

Morning in Kagoshima:

  • Arrive early in the morning at Kagoshima Chuo Station.
  • Shiroyama Park & Observatory
  • Reimeikan – Kagoshima Museum
  • Terukuni Shrine

Afternoon in Kagoshima:

  • Sengan En Park
  • Shoko Shuseikan Museum
  • Tenmonkan Area

Now that you know all the tips, we can start with the best things to do in Kagoshima!

Shiroyama Observatory Park

shiroyama

Take the city view bus and go to Shiroyama Park and Observatory for a bird’s eye view of the city and a sneak peek at Sakurajima in the background. I went up the stairs as I was already close by, but you can get a bus to get up if you don’t feel like walking!

Perched atop a scenic hill, this observatory offers breathtaking panoramic views of the cityscape below. If it’s not a cloudy day, the Sakurajima volcano majestically dominates the horizon.

There are plenty of things to do around, a few statues, a park to stroll around (with viper warnings), a vending machine, and cute cats roaming around! There are also a bunch of souvenir shops if you want to get some souvenirs.

It’s also a great spot to view the sunset.

Reimeikan – Kagoshima History Museum and Fine Arts Center

Next on your Kagoshima 1 day Itinerary is the Reimeikan, the city’s main museum (in the same area, you can also find the “Kagoshima City Modern Litterature Museum and the “Kagoshima City Museum of Art”), where you can learn about the city’s history.

The museum has three floors and many English explanations, so you don’t have to worry about not understanding what it is about. I spent a solid 1h30 there and didn’t read everything, so I recommend at least two hours if you’re a history buff and want to learn about everything.

The museum is built on the remains of Kagoshima’s castle; while the castle has not been reconstructed, you can still find the Main Gate of Tsurumaru Castle.

Terukuni Shrine

Next up is the Terukuni Shrine, a cultural gem in the city. This serene sanctuary offers a glimpse into Kagoshima’s rich history and spiritual heritage.

The shrine exudes tranquillity and reverence. It is dedicated to the revered Shimazu clan, which played a significant role in shaping the region’s identity.

As you wander its sacred grounds, you’ll see striking architectural features and ornate decorations, each bearing testament to the shrine’s profound significance.

After visiting the Shrine, I decided to stroll near the waterfront park to enjoy the view of Sakurajima, but if you’re on a time crunch, you could skip this. You can also find the Kagoshima City Aquarium there; I am not big on aquariums and zoos, so I decided to skip it, but it’s there if you want to visit.

Sengan En Park

For the afternoon, go to Sengan En Park, a serene oasis covering about 12 acres! You could easily spend 2 hours there exploring fully at a leisurely pace.

Wander through meticulously landscaped gardens, where every stone and blossom tells a story of centuries past. With views of Sakurajima looming majestically in the distance, Sengan En Park offers a captivating blend of history and natural beauty.

An English pamphlet with a recommended route for what to see in the park is available at the entrance.

Here are some of the main points of interest in the park:
– Shimadzu Satsuma Kiriko Glassworks
– Cat Shrine
– Shoko Shuseokan Museum (see below)
– Site of Reverberatory Furnace
– The House
– Konan Bamboo Groves
– Tea Ceremony Experience

Plus, it’s a truly beautiful park and worth a visit if you’re in Kagoshima. The visit is soothing, and the beautiful views of Sakurajima are pleasant to photograph and take in. Depending on the time of the year, different events are held.

Ticket price:
Garden & Museum: 1000 yen / adult
Garden, Museum & House: 1600 yen / adult

More info about the park here.

Shoko Shuseikan Museum

Step into the captivating world of Kagoshima’s industrial history at the Shoko Shuseikan Museum. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this museum offers a profound exploration of the Shimazu clan’s role in shaping Japan’s modernization.

From innovative exhibits to historical artefacts, immerse yourself in the rich legacy of Kagoshima’s industrial heritage.

tenmonkan kagohima

Visit Tenmonkan Area

This bustling district pulses with energy, offering many shops, restaurants, and attractions to explore. From traditional izakayas serving local delicacies to trendy boutiques showcasing modern Japanese fashion, Tenmonkan promises a day filled with excitement and authentic experiences.

Alternative Kagoshima One Day Itinerary: Sakurajima

Sakurajima is the emblem of Kagoshima and one of the most active volcanoes in the world, so I understand the want to visit it. I loved my time there but I feel like it’s a bit much to do if you only have one day, it’s doable but it’s a more rushed pace.

Personally, I dedicated a whole day to visiting Sakurajima to enjoy it to the fullest, but if you don’t have that kind of time in your itinerary and you’d like to visit Sakurajima during your day trip to Kagoshima City, here is an alternative itinerary you should consider for the day:

Morning Kagoshima:

  • Arrive early at the Kagoshima Chuo Station
  • Get a “CUTE one-day pass.”
  • Take the Ferry to Sakurajima (10min ride)
  • Take the bus to the Yunohira Observation Deck to get as close as possible to Sakurajima.
  • Take the bus back down to Yogan Nagisa Park Footbath and relax
  • Visit the Sakurajima Visitor Center for souvenirs and a free exhibit.
  • Stroll along the port

Afternoon in Kagoshima:

  • Make your way back into the City.
  • Go to Sengan En Park
  • Check out Shiroyama Observatory and Park
  • Visit Tenmonkan if time allows
  • Back to the train

Of course, if you feel that some of the activities I included in the first itinerary are more appropriate for you, you can swap some; this is just a template based on my own experience and a trip to Kagoshima!

Conclusion On One Day In Kagoshima, Japan

I highly recommend adding Kagoshima to your Japan itinerary if you’re in Kyushu and adding Kyushu to your Japan itinerary if it’s not there yet!

While most tourists flock to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, Kagoshima feels peaceful. Of course, there are still tourists and locals enjoying the attractions, but nowhere near as many as you found in the previously mentioned area.

So, it’s a very enjoyable day trip, but like I said, if you have the possibility, I recommend spending at least 2 to 3 days there to enjoy it fully at a more leisurely pace.
