We all love some excellent comfort and filling food during winter to make us feel better during this season which can be a little grey for some of us. 5 Easy French Dishes To Try This Winter + Recipes
At some point, we all would like to cook from different cuisine than our own, but that can seem a little daunting if you’re not skilled at cooking. However, worry not; you don’t need a chef from a Michelin guide with those easy French recipes; you can get yourself a taste of France straight to your kitchen wherever you are.
There are many excellent dishes in France, some more complicated than others, but I narrowed it down to 5 tasty and easy French recipes! I am not a good cook, so I promise you those recipes are doable! All you have to do after is to enjoy a delicious meal and feel your French fantasy.
Are you ready to cook some delicious mouth-watering dishes?!
#1 CRÊPES – SWEET OR SAVOURY
Crêpes are pretty popular in France, and they’re what the pancakes are in the US, in a way. They’re not pancakes, by the way! They are super easy to make and can be topped with anything you like (ham, cheese and egg for me!), sweet as a dessert or savoury as the main course!
Time:
Ingredient:
For 15 Crêpes
- 300g of flour
- 3 eggs
- 3 tbsp of sugar
- 2 tbsp of olive oil
- 50g of melted butter
- 60 cl of milk (can be replaced with oat milk)
You can also add some rum or orange blossom aroma if you like!
Recipe:
- Put the flour into a bowl and form a well with it.
2. Add the eggs, sugar, melted butter and oil
3. Gently mix with a whip while gradually adding the milk. The dough should stay liquid but slightly thick. Make sure there are no bubbles!
4. Let it rest for 30 min-1 hour in the fridge for the crepe to hold better and be softer.
5. Heat the pan with some oil and pour the dough with a ladle into the frypan. Please wait for it to be cooked to flip it!
Although if you lack time, you can skip part 4 and directly prepare your crêpes!
We like to do in France to try to flip the crêpe without using a spatula, milking to an amusing situation!
#2 QUICHE LORRAINE
A Quiche Lorraine is fantastic all year round, not only in winter. But there’s nothing like a freshly warm baked quiche Lorraine on a cold winter day to make your stomach happy.
Another good reason to love this French pie is that if you’re a vegetarian, you can adapt the recipe to a vegetarian quiche!
I will share the traditional recipe here, but the quiche is versatile and can be filled with everything! You can’t miss it even if you’re not good at cooking like me!
Time: 30min to 1 hour
Ingredients:
For the pastry:
175g plain flour
100g cold butter, cut into pieces
1 egg yolk
For the filling:
200g pack lardons
50g of gruyère cheese
200ml fresh cream
2 large eggs
Salt and pepper
Recipe:
For the pastry:
Tip the flour into a large bowl to mix it, add the butter and rub in gently until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Add 2 tablespoons of cold water until the pastry is a ball. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and use it to line a loose-bottomed flan tin.
Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
If you do not wish to cook the pastry yourself, you can always pre-buy one at the supermarket, which, not going to lie, is something I do pretty often; the dough is easy to make, but it saves you some time to buy it pre-made.
For the filling:
Preheat the oven to 180°c
Add some shredded butter to the dough.
Fry the lardons in a frypan
Mix the eggs, cream and milk, then add the lardons.
Season it, then pours it onto the dough.
Cook it between 45min to 50min, and voila!
#3 TARTIFLETTE
This recipe is one of the most French winter dishes you could eat! If you’re a cheese lover, you will adore this recipe.
For four persons:
Time:1h20
Preparation: 20min Cooking: 50min
Ingredient:
-1 Reblochon cheese
– 1kg of potatoes
– 500gr of onions
-200gr of lardons
-15cl of white wine
Recipe:
-Preheat the oven to 200c
-Peemilken boils your potatoes for about 15min to cut them into thin slices.
-Cook your onions & lardons in some butter, then pour the white wine in and let cook until the onions are thoroughly soaked
– Place the potato slices into an ovenproof gratin dish, layer them, and add some of the onions and lardons before layering with more potatoes and adding the rest. Seasons
– Layer the top of it with reblochon slices, or you can cut it in half and place both halves on top!
I never add any onions to my tartiflette; however, as I despise them, you can do this dish without them; it works with garlic!
For a vegetarian tartiflette, remove the lardons and add in some veggies of your choice!
#4 GRATIN DAUPHINOIS
This one is probably one of my favourites as my grandma used to cook it for me on my school lunch break when I would eat lunch at her place. Naturally, it holds a special place in my heart; although her version wasn’t the same as the original recipe, it was delicious.
